In genius studies, Thims IQ refers to the question of the "relative brightness or intelligence" (Cox, 1926), i.e. IQ, of Libb Thims, whose IQ estimates range between 70 to 89 (age 7-8), to between Dr. Seuss (IQ = H2SO4)[1] and Faust (IQ = legend)[2] in 2013, to 190± (2014), to upwards of 230, prior to the genius ceiling IQ being resent to "210" (Apr 2020)[3], or generally an auto-estimated IQ[4] of "below Lewis", on the ever-changing top 2000 minds scale, as Thims has frequently responded, when queried: "what is your IQ?"[5]

In 1984, Libb Thims, then aged 7 or 8, was "held back" and made to retake 2nd grade, per reports that he seemed "bored" in class, thereby being assigned, by his second grade teachers, conceptually[6], with a "below average" intellect or IQ below 100, or possibly 70 to 89 range, as modern school educators categorize this type of scenario.[7]

In 1988, Thims, age 15 to 17, having stopped studying in school, since age 2nd grade retake fiasco, took the school-mandated ACT, filled out the first half, then, after realizing the test was a waste of time, began to put check marks in the same column, alternating ever 10 questions or so, without even looking at the questions, for the latter third of the test, out of basically an "I don't care about this" mindset, scoring 19, which correlates to an IQ of 97 to 108, depending.

Why? | Vanity puzzles

In 1991, Libb Thims, aged 19, having basically a "blank slate"[8], with respect to fundamental education, began to engage into a Faustian quest for knowledge (see: progress report), so to find meaning and understanding, in respect to "why", in respect to fundamental principles, a person was supposed to "do" any thing, in the first place, particularly in respect to the existence-defining question: so "what do you do?"[9] (for a living), generally directed at males.

The puzzle here, being with respect to the evidenced fact (see: Buss study), that the better one answers this question, the more likely or probably it is that one will get the person asking the question to "fall in love" them in "20 minutes", as famously portrayed in the 1967 film Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, intermixed with the famous "bar scene" of Good Will Hunting (1997), wherein the question of "do" resolves into a question of "vanity labels".

“The [Faustian] puppet-play echoed and vibrated in many tones through my mind. I, also, had gone from one branch of knowledge to another, and was early enough convinced of the vanity of all. I had tried life in many forms, and the experience had left me only the more unsatisfied and worried. I now carried these thoughts about with me, and indulged myself in them, in lonely hours, but without committing anything to writing. Most of all, I concealed from Herder my mystic-cabalistic chemistry, and everything connected with it.”
Johann Goethe (1770), reflection on intercourse with Johann Herder, in Strasburg [10]

Here, to clarify, Goethe reverberates in pure intellectual kinship with Thims. Thims, however, was not aware of Goethe in these years, not having become knowledgeable about Goethe and his human chemical theory, until about Oct 2005, or thereafter, following a reading of Prigogine's 1984 citation of Goethe.[11]

In 2001, Thims, after having completed degrees in chemical engineering[8], electrical engineering, qualified, accepted, and been in the Marine Corps officer aviation program, and while working towards a degrees in particle physics and biochemistry and studying to become a neurosurgeon (see: progress report), began to write on and do historical research in attempts to develop the newly-forming science of human chemical thermodynamics; draft manuscripts of which he began to circulate for review.

Public IQ | Queries

In 2003, the question of the “IQ” of Libb Thims became an over-common query.[12]

In 2005, Thims began to go public with his work, online and in video, after which the question of the intellectual level of Thims became a common Internet query.[12]

In 2007, Georgi Gladyshev, Russian physical chemist, noted for his 1979 thermodynamics of evolution theory, in his “Hierarchical Thermodynamics: a General Theory of Existence”, of the Russian science journal Becthиk, profiled Thims along side Euler, Gibbs, Lagrange, Poincare, Carnot, Clausius, Bogolyubov, and Onsager, as shown below:[13]

Gladyshev, we might note, flew out to Chicago, from Russia, to take Thims out to dinner, and inform him that he had nominated Thims to the Nobel Prize committee, specifically for his Human Chemistry (2007) publication and previous 1995 to 2004 human chemical thermodynamics work. In this group, six of these individuals are shown with the IQ, with a mean IQ of 193, as has been determined by genius studies scholars. The IQs of Bogolyubov, Onsager, and Thims presently (Mar 2021) are unknown [?], and have not yet been determined. The topic of the IQ of Libb Thims began to be semi-common in 2003, after he had began to go public with his human chemical thermodynamics work, beginning in 2001.

Online IQ rankings

In Mar 2008, Thims posted online his list of 15 people, shown below, which he had been growing since about 1993, said or purported to have an IQ of 200 or above, ranked purely by highest cited IQ, wherein we see fool's gold (non-bolded names) interspersed with gold (bolded names):[3]

1. Michael Kearny | IQ: 325
2. William Sidis | IQ: 200, 25-300
3. Marilyn Savant | IQ: 186, 228
4. Leonardo Vinci | IQ: 180, 210-225
5. Johann Goethe | IQ 210
6. Kim Yong | IQ: 200-210
7. Hypatia | IQ: 170-210
8. Nathan Leopold | IQ: 200-210
9. Emanuel Swedenborg | IQ: 205
10. Gottfried Leibniz | IQ: 205

11. John Mill | IQ: 200
12. Francis Galton | IQ: 200
13. Hugo Grotius | IQ: 200
14. Thomas Wolsey | IQ: 200
15. Michael Grost | IQ: 200
A 2015 profile on Libb Thims, made by Inderjit Singh, an American philosopher and writer, who then estimated Thims' IQ at 200.[14]

On 28 Sep 2010, Thims, having grown the list to 32 people (see: Thims 32), showing Adragon Mello (1976-) in the top spot, listed with an IQ of 400 (calculated by his father when he was age four), began to take it upon himself to "re-rank all the geniuses" and to assign them correct or real IQs (realistic IQs), based generally on the Cox-Terman method of gauging the IQs of historical geniuses, so to clean up the growing mess of assigning people or little children over-inflated, miscalculated, fake, or misinformed IQs. On 5 Mar 2021, Thims had ranked and re-ranked about 1,200 minds and geniuses by real IQ, as shown below:[3]

The long-term goal, presently, is to get the list to 2,000 names, then hone, perfect, and chisel specifics of the positions, to get a more accurate gauge of real geniuses and minds.

Landau scale | Sliding IQ

Thims, During these years, whenever queried about his "own IQ", which began to occur in a yearly basis, in the 2010s, would refer to Lev Landau's famous 1930s "physicist genius scale"[15], which he kept in his coat pocket (showing people, from time to time), listing himself on his own scale, considering those below him "fools" and those above him "superior intellects", and scaling himself up and down, in his mind, on his scale, from year to year, depending on his accomplishments. Thims, likewise, envisions himself in his own top 2000 minds scale, generally in the top 200 range of historical minds and geniuses, a position which varies depending, similar to how Landau adjusted himself on his own scale.

A smattering of online discussion of the IQ of Libb Thims, 2017 to 2019, on Quora and Reddit; with mostly ignorant responses.

In 2019, Thims, to cite one example, while in the home of Mirza Beg, in Pakistan, amid a discussion of the IQ and SPE rankings of Mirza Beg, and also how he will likely be ranking into the top 200 or so, in the top 2000 genius rankings, posthumously, was asked by Beg's wife, Ishrat Jabeen Beg, where he ranked on the genius scale; the dialogue is as follows:

“Where do you rank your self? And where is Marie Curie (#121)? And who invented the atomic bomb (Leo Szilard (#496))?”
— Ishrat Jabeen Beg (2019), queries by Mirza Beg's wife; after Mirza Beg had informed his wife that Thims had ranked him below Bill Gates, in existographic geniuses
“I rank below Gilbert Lewis.”
— Libb Thims (2019), "reply to Ishrat Beg", Sep 19

Thims, in short, replied that he ranked, in the top 1000 genius (now: top 2000 geniuses and minds), below Gilbert Lewis, at the moment of that query.[16]

Personal gauging?

In May 2012, Thims, similar to how Bertrand Russell, supposedly, made an uberman list of geniuses, and ranked himself (see: auto-estimated IQ)[17], in this list, with IQ of 180+, water-tested the practice of attempting to gauge his own IQ there, for a few months, slated himself into the then-growing "genius IQs" table, a point when existives were being ranked together with historical names, positioned himself online, in the rankings, above Sadi Carnot but below Gilbert Lewis, listing himself with an IQ of 190±, with guesstimates ranging between 140 and 225 or so, based on various published statements about Thims, e.g. Steven Pearce (2009), Mark Janes (2011), among other IQ gauging methods.[18]

“My IQ is somewhere between Dr. Seuss, who in 1931 claimed an IQ of H2SO4, and Dr. Faustus, who in 1514 sold his soul to the devil for truth, knowledge, and power; the embodiment of the latter found in the mind of Goethe, who in 1809 professed that he and his wife were like CaCO3 (limestone), who when put into contact with H2SO4 (Captain) have no “choice” but to debond, and who in 1926 [Cox] became the first ever person ranked with an IQ of 225.”
— Libb Thims (2013), reply to query by Paul Rael, Aug [19]
“I am curious as to your IQ? Upon further exploration of the website, I have satiated my own inquisitiveness in this regard; you yourself calculate your real IQ as both ±190 and 160-230.”
— Inderjit Singh (2014), “The Smartest ‘Living’ Person: Dissemination of Ideas”, Hmolpedia 2020 Forum, Apr 28

Thims, for a few months, attempted this public "online listing" of a gauged IQ himself, per reason that as he was estimating the IQ of ever single genius of history and on the planet present, he should, by default, be able to gauge his own IQ? This, resultingly, turned out to be difficult (see: IQ state / flux problem, below); and the public online listing, however, was "abandoned", basically as it gave Thims a head ache, when thinking about a "static" IQ being fixed somewhere.

IQ state | Flux problem

See main: IQ state [20]
Interview dialogue (2004) between New York Times journalist Deborah Solomon and Stephen Hawking.[21] Presently (see: Hawking's IQ), as of 2021, Hawking's standing rankings, are: (IQ:180|#99) (RGM:65|1,350+); hence, he is in the upper end of the range.

In 2011 to 2014, Thims, while ranking the IQs of geniuses, found that working to climb the ladder of intellect, or conversely, in some cases, to descending the ladder of intellect, one's IQ changes from month-to-month and year-to-year, going up or down depending. Moreover, it has been found, from experience, that IQs above 160 to the genius ceiling IQ, recently reduced from 225 to 210 (Apr 2020)[3], is a VERY gray area, to say the lest.

Hence, it was found by Thims, by experience, when repeatedly, year after year, asked the query: "what is your IQ?", that a person may have an idea or strong opinion in their mind of what they "think their IQ" is [?] or know what some official intelligence test determined their IQ to be, aka "paper IQ"[22], or what others have guesstimated their IQ as, but that when all things are boiled down, "real IQs" (or true IQs) are only accurately gauged in posthumous 50+ year retrospect, by people in the know.

The best one can do, when asked the query: "what is your IQ?", if one is in or approaching the genius IQ dividing line (IQ:140±), set by Terman (1916)[23], is to: (a) say: presently, "I intuit that I fall in a range between "this mind" and "that mind" (e.g. on the Thims 2000 scale, or whatever scale one wishes to cite), (b) deflect the question to what other people have said about their IQ, (c) say "well I have scored so-and-so value on these tests", or (d) use the so-called "Hawking method"[21], and say that "people who boast about their IQs are losers; but, I hope I'm near the upper end of the range" (see: Hawking's IQ).

In other words, a given person's "IQ", aka intelligence level, or intellectual brightness, tends to remain in a "general flux" or "IQ state"[20] that varies with time or spacetime, which can change per focus, effort, lack thereof, or circumstances and location. Moreover, sometimes "genius" is not recognized for several centuries or millennia afterwords. In addition, circumstances can effect or change one's IQ. Changing latitude, for example, will change one's IQ over time:

“It’s a scientific fact that if you stay in California, you lose one point off your IQ every year.”
— Truman Capote (c.1965), The Portable Curmudgeon (pg. 59) [24]
“If you want your children, or yourself, to be ‘book smart’, it would pay to live near to the ‘latitude of intellect’ (46˚) or safely within the ‘band of intellect’ (35˚-65˚).”
— Libb Thims (2003), Human Thermodynamics (pg. 392) [25]

The prime example is how Dirac became "dumb", so to say, when he moved from Bristol, UK (51°N) to Tallahassee, Florida (30°N), thereby moving out of the so-called "band of intellect", in respect to latitude and genius.[26] The same the case with respect to working on or not working problems, which will cause one's IQ to either go up or down, depending.

IQ estimates

The following are estimations of the IQ of Libb Thims, by various means:

IQ E.jpg Category Summary Estimator Year
IQ O.png=70-89?[7]

IQ O.png=below 100

Age 7-8 When Thims was in second grade, teachers reported (written on report cards), that Thims seemed to be "board" in class; a "decision was made; and he was held back, and made to retake the entire YEAR over again (see: progress report). This was a big "slow down" turning point, to say the least; in respect to giving Thims the ability, to "step back", and look at the operation the the world, without being engaged in it, for a period of ten years. 2nd grade teachers 1984
IQ O.png=97[27]

IQ O.png=108[28]

Age 15-17 Thims, while taking the high school required ACT test, got the point, after answering half or more the questions, to basically just putting x marks, one after another, in the same column, just to get done with the test.[29] Resulting score: 19. This translates to an SAT score of 980 to 1010.[30] This translates to an IQ of 97[27] or 107-109 (mean: 108)[28], depending on conversion chart. We note, that this "joke ACT" score, in later years, was the reason that Thims, did NOT get accepted to Harvard Medical School (per reason that they required an ACT or SAT test score for admittance), despite being in the top 8% of his chemical engineering class (and a few classes away from completed a second degree in electrical engineering) at the University of Michigan, when he applied.
IQ O.png=140-150
Esquire (Nov 1999).jpg
Thims did the Esquire magazine “Gεπ1us Tεst”, which has max IQ score 160, for fun, scoring in the 140-150 IQ range, without too much effort.[31]
IQ CP.png=200, 204 In 2005 to 2015, Thims, while doing research into who had written on human chemical thermodynamics, prior to himself, began to discover that most who did so, tended to also have been previously cited to have had IQs (shown below right) in the genius ceiling range; the IQ and ranking position (IQ|#), shown below left, are the re-calibrated values by Thims:[32]

The three names shown bolded did "pure" human chemical thermodynamics, defining people "explicitly" as chemicals, relationship changes as chemical reactions, and relationship bonds (e.g. marriage or friendships) as chemical bonds, to which Thims shares the most kinship. The mean comparison to people IQ of the three bolded names, yields mean IQ of 200; the average of all five names yields a mean IQ of 204.

IQ CP.png=193 In 2007, Georgi Gladyshev, in his “Hierarchical Thermodynamics: a General Theory of Existence”, in the Russian science journal Becthиk, profiled Thims along side the following:[13]

which yields a mean comparison IQ of 193.

  • Newton (IQ:205|#2)
  • Einstein (IQ:205|#3)
