In existographies, Ram Poudel (22- AE) (c.1977- ACM) (CR:32) (LH:9) (TC:41) is a Nepalese-born American mechanical engineer, thermodynamicist, and sociophysicist, noted for []

Overview

In 2011, Poudel was the project head (Ѻ), as a mechanical engineering professor, at the Tribhuvan University, for the Asian Development Bank funded “Effective Deployment of Distributed Small Wind Systems in Asian Rural Areas”, which was a success, during which time Poudel realized that he was the only person in the department without a PhD, after which he wrote to his advisor at Tribhuvan University, who resultantly sent Poudel to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, to get his PhD.[1]

In 2012, during his first year, at UMass, Poudel worked as a teaching assistant for a course in systems identification, amid which he envisioned doing his PhD on “Energy and the Poverty Dynamics”, conceptually-based on a Navier-Stokes equation (Ѻ) [compare: Arthur Iberall] for a social field, i.e. a “social fluid” model, or something along these lines. Poudel proposed this idea to his new UMass advisor, who in turn gave him Howard T. Odum’s Energy Basis for Man and Nature (1976) and Environment, Power, and Society (1971) to read, which initiated Poudel’s engagement in trying to grapple with the subject of mechanical engineering based social energetics and or social mechanics, focused on poverty betterment.[1]

Social field theory

In 2012, Poudel began to make efforts to work out a "social field" theory, based on physics and thermodynamics.

In 2014, Poudel, in his "Social Field Theory", attempted to argue the following:[2]

“The social field theory hypothesize that the patterns of general interaction of an individual in a society can be modeled the same way as other field concepts – such as one the Newton’s laws of the gravitational field.”

On this basis, citing Prigogine (2003), attempted to explain "poverty", individually and as a societal whole.

Conferences

In 2016, Ram Poudel was mentored by Charles Hall on how to organize the 7th BioPhysical Economics (BPE), subtitled “Where Natural Science Meets Social Sciences”, a semi-themed sociophysics conference, in association with International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE).[3] This which helped to bring together: Libb Thims and Jurgen Mimkes, among others, e.g. Serge Galam.[4]

In 2019, Poudel, stimulated by conference talks of Adrian Bejan, and his social constructal law ideas, registered the domain iaisae.org, to be host for an international group that would host a bi-annual conference themed on integrating social sciences with the natural sciences under the umbrella of thermodynamics.

On 26 Jan 2020, Poudel, with five committee members in mind, shown below, drew up IAISAE articles of incorporation, non-profit IRS registration, and association by-laws, themed on the bylaws of the Gibbs society. [5]:

Thermodynamics 2.0 | Conference

In Jun 2020, Poudel organized the "Thermodynamics 2.0" conference, which was originally planned to be at the Worchester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts, but became a Zoom-based virtual conference, with about 70 presenters, and 300 people registered to watch.[6] The conference was a semi-success, given the pandemic, resulting in parts being streamed on Facebook, and the talks being scree-recorded and uploaded to the IAISAE YouTube channel.[7]

Adams Award | Iberall Award

In Oct 2020, the IAISAE gave the bi-annual Richard Newbold Adams Award for work on the “Integration of Natural Science and Social Science" (in the social sciences) to Burin Gumjudpai and the bi-annual Arthur Iberall Award for work in the “Integration of Natural Science and Social Science" (in the natural sciences) to Bernard Guy.[8]

Thims conflict

In 2019 to late 2020, during the formation stages of the "Thermodynamics 2.0" conference, Poudel began to come into conflict with Thims. Firstly, during the formation of this conference, Poudel asked Thims to generate a list[9] of people to invite, per country, per reason that Poudel had connected with someone from the National Science Foundation (NSF) who agreed to fund a certain number of third world scholars to attend the conference; and also asked Thims to be on the "board of directors", to his conceived "International Association for the Integration of Science and Engineering" (IAISAE). Thims, initially tentatively agreeing to this, slowly came into conflict with Poudel, in a number of areas, such as:

  1. Thermodynamics 2.0 [?] | Thims attempted to explain to Poudel that "2.0" was an outdated neo-popular computer terminology phrase, not at all applicable to the social applications of thermodynamics; many having lost their professorships over, e.g. Ostwald, over century ago.
  2. ISAE [?] | Thims informed Poudel that the "Integration of Science and Engineering" (ISAE) acronym was inane, in that "science and engineering" been integrated, the latter follows the former like dog follows it's tale; Poudel replied that he needed to make it like this, so to get NSF funding for the conference.[10]
  3. Information [?] | Poudel, in his draft stages, originally configured the conference home page, to read that "information" is the "language of thermodynamics", and that in the future, information will become more fundamental than entropy, energy, or matter. This was a huge "red flag" for Thims.[11]
  4. Creationism [?] | Poudel, before the conference, was probing Thims about whether he should accept various article submissions from "closet creationist" authors to the conference; during the conference, Poudel played a creationism by Mike Pence; after the conference, Poudel said he wanted Thims to attend a Zoom conference, where Keith Skene would present his "closet" theistic thermodynamics ideas; Thims, processed this, by writing up a very frank and to the point article on Skene; Skene retracted his offer to present his theories in Zoom video; Poudel got angry; Thims retracted from the entire situation.[12]
  5. Adams Award [?] and Iberall Award | Poudel, at some point, had the brainchild that he was going to give out two awards, during the 2020 "Thermodynamics: Social Science Meets Natural Science Conference", one being an "Adams Award", named after Richard Adams, to give to someone in the social sciences, and an Iberall Award, named after Arthur Iberall, to give to someone in the natural science. Thims tried to explain to Poudel that Richard Adams was the wrong choice, per reason that he denied or avoided the role of "entropy" and the "second law" in his publications; that it was Leslie White, Richard Adams' mentor, who was the known as the "prophet of the second law", in anthropology; and that the top gun name for applying thermodynamics to the social sciences was Henry Adams (and his brother Brooks Adams), and that Richard Adams was a "small fry" comparatively speaking:
Henry Adams was the preeminent voice of ‘social thermodynamics’. His collected essays in The Education of Henry Adams on: ‘the Dynamo and the Virgin’ (1900), ‘The Grammar of Science’ (1903), and a ‘Dynamical Theory of History’ (1904) were exemplary.”

Moreover, Thims pointed out to Poudel that there was established precedence and discussion from a decade ago, about "award medal" namesake proposals.[14] Poudel, however, seemed to be immune to absorbing and processing such feedback? Poudel moved forward with announcing the award winners, using said medal namesakes, without disclosing any selection methodology, and asked Thims to give a Zoom speech during the award ceremony, for two people whose work he knew little about, for an award name he disagreed with, chosen by a selection methodology he had no clue about.

Thims also suggested a more "clear" and meaningful site icon (see: discussion) for the project; Poudel was resistant to even making this change. The only single change that Poudel made throughout this entire near two-year endeavor or project development, to which Thims had invested much time, was to remove the "information is the language of thermodynamics" quote from the conference homepage, after Thims said he would not attend if this sentence was on the homepage.

Going forward, Thims communicated to Poudel, to avoid such build up, to the point of having unvented-discussions, concerning miseducation fundamentals, such as popularizing the idea that "information is the language of thermodynamics", that the work of Richard Adams is an exemplary model in the field of thermodynamics applied to the social sciences, or that closet creationism or theological thermodynamics should presented in public lecture as a viable model, WITHOUT concordant discussion of the errors in such a methodology, and so on, and so on, that he would, from now on only engage with Poudel on public discussion pages, such as any Hmolpedia "talk page" or "user talk page", or in any of the Hmolpedia forum[15] pages, as compared to lost filed away discussion and feedback in email. This "open" method has always been the modus operandi of Thims, e.g. as seen in open public peer review process of the JHT articles (2005 to 2015).

Education

In 1999, Poudel completed his BS in mechanical engineering at Pulchowk Campus, Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, Nepal. In 2006, Poudel completed his MS in mechanical engineering, at Northern Arizona University, after which he lectured on thermodynamics, for a decade, to mechanical engineers at Tribhuvan University, Nepal. In c.2019, Poudel completed his PhD, under someone [add], at some university [add], on some type of energy theory and or thermodynamics applied to society, economics, and or sustainability.
